The Rarity of Encountering a Thresher Shark
Encountering a thresher shark (ニタリザメ) around Izu Oshima is an exceptionally rare experience. Thresher sharks are occasionally spotted in the waters off Izu Oshima, with sightings at the “Aki no Hama” beach point being extremely rare, indicating the possibility of encountering undiscovered marine life even in areas accessible from Tokyo.
The rarity of the thresher shark is also tied to its ecology and conservation status. The IUCN Red List estimates that the population of thresher sharks has decreased by 50-79% over the past three generations (55.5 years), classifying it as an endangered species (EN/Endangered) due to declining trends across its distribution in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Furthermore, the thresher shark was listed in Appendix II of the CITES at the Johannesburg conference in 2016, regulating its international trade and increasing its rarity.
Thresher sharks, known for their distinctive appearance and hunting technique using their long tail fins, draw the interest of divers and marine life enthusiasts. They can grow up to 428cm in length but have no records of shark attacks, showing a tendency to avoid humans.
Spotting a thresher shark around Izu Oshima, considering its rarity and conservation significance, is indeed a special experience. However, such encounters are unpredictable and not guaranteed at specific times or locations.
